In March I visited Djibouti at the beginning of a larger trip to Ethiopia & Kenya. As a person who plans elaborate detours just to visit places like Lake Titicaca or Sheboygan, WI, a brief visit to Djibouti seemed like a sensible amuse-bouche to kick off my trip to the Horn of Africa. It was not. I do not recommend going to Djibouti. It is a harsh and unhospitable place with a funny name. The only other tourist I met there was a German bro who was trying to visit all of the countries in the world. He was an idiot.
That being said, I did manage to hire a driver for a day to take me out to see a crazy salt lake in the middle of the desert. It was a fantastic lake. On the way there, in the middle of nowhere, our driver pulled over and yelled at some girls sitting under a tree. He got out and yelled some more and then came back with a 2 liter water bottle filled with what looked like chunky eggnog. He explained it was goat milk and I should try some. I declined. He chewed through the whole thing before we got back to the hotel.
