I had an unforgettable night at a hardcore club in Tokyo back in January. This seems like the antithesis of Japanese culture - loud music and tattoos - but I think it fits perfectly. In my experience, when the Japanese set their minds to something, they go all in. Also, they love weird hobbies/activities. I got to know one of the bands and we all went out after the show. Most of them were classically trained in music and also had a much deeper knowledge of Western punk and metal than I ever will. Also, they taught me a few great Japanese swear words.
When I go to new places, I always look up punk venues and live sports. It’s a great way to experience local culture away from the rest of the tourists. Sports and music are for locals. We all want to feel special and have something to brag about when we get home and this is a fantastic and cheap shortcut to killer anecdotes that’ll leave your friends jealous and make them think you’re a travel god.
Also beer. Once you’re at the show, buy the band a round of beers and they’ll love you and teach you swear words.
